Strengthening of Legal Education to Promote Social Justice : Challenges of 21st Century






Prof. Ranbir Singh, Vice-Chancellor, National Law University, Delhi spoke on the very sensitive topic “Strengthening of Legal Education to Promote Social Justice : Challenges of 21st Century”.  Prof. Nishtha Jaswal, Chairperson, Department of Laws welcomed the guests and refreshed the audience in laudable words about his unforgettable wisdom studded words which everybody treasured yesterday.  Prof. Ranbir Singh highlighted the importance of role played by the lawyers in the freedom struggle of every country. Initially, Prof. Ranbir Singh drew a road map of legal education in India and informed that there are more than 1000 colleges in India. He also discussed in detail the phenomenal change which has emerged in legal profession. Many senior Professors, Lawyers and Judges did not opt for the profession by choice but by chance. But the new generation is opting for this profession by choice, therefore, more is expected from the law teachers.   He categorically mentioned the qualities of lawyers as being technically sound, professionally competent and socially relevant, i.e., to be good human beings. He further highlighted the fact that it is difficult to convert information into knowledge and knowledge into wisdom. He stressed upon the importance of moot court activities in the present legal education system and advised the students to equip themselves with these learning experiences so as to be successful in professional life. He concluded his lecture by emphasizing on the need for introspection whether we have given back to the society what have received from the society.
